PRESTWICH Heys came from behind before securing a 5-3 penalty shootout victory at Whitchurch Alport in the first round of the Macron Cup.

The two sides, promotion rivals in the First Division for two seasons before Alport’s promotion last year, produced another absorbing encounter in front of a crowd of 212 at Yockings Park.

The hosts, unbeaten in their last seven games, made a flying start, and led inside four minutes when Callum O’Connor’s ball over the top found Arron Johns who lobbed Heys keeper Michael Smith.

Whitchurch enjoyed the better of the opening stages but as the half progressed Heys came more into it.

That pattern continued into the second period with Heys taking the initiative and in the 69th minute they levelled with yet another 25-yard strike by Chris Baguley.

Heys had the ball in the net again moments later but the effort was ruled out for offside.

With neither side able to add to their tally the game went straight to penalties, with captain Jake Wood stepping up first to score for Heys.

Smith then continued his impressive form since returning to the side by saving Alport’s first spot-kick, taken by Matty Ashbrook. The two sides then exchanged successful penalties.

Jacob Holt, Chris Baguley and Carl Fitton were successful for Heys before Mark Ayres preserved the Prestwich side’s 100-per-cent success rate from the spot with the decisive fifth strike.

The game also saw debuts from the bench for new signings Dominic Butler, from Atherton LR, and Hensley Mills from Daisy Hill.

Heys’ previous game saw Justin Pickering fire a hat-trick in their goal spree at home to struggling Atherton LR, with Rio Wilson-Heyes, Lee Grimshaw and Jamie Baguley also netting in a 6-0 win.

LR had shown plenty of attacking intent and Smith was tested on a number of occasions, though Pickering’s first goal was the slender difference at half time.

Rio Wilson-Heys drilled in Heys’ second early in the second half and Michael Itela played in Pickering to score the third.

Grimshaw headed in Danny Vincent’s cross for 4-0 and after Pickering completed his hat-trick, Jamie Baguley completed the scoring with a shot that took a deflection on its way in.

Heys were scheduled to host Chadderton in a Hallmark Security League First Division North fixture last night, and they travel to Lower Breck this Saturday, following tomorrow night’s Hallowe’en Fireworks event at Adie Moran Park, which starts at 6.30pm.
