PRESTWICH missed out on the chance to build on last weekend's victory over league leaders Oldham Hulmeians after conceding a late equaliser in a 1-1 draw at home to Accrington Amateurs.

Mike Kosub's men looked set to increase their chances of a top-three finish when Matty Struminski stabbed home the opener with 20 minutes remaining.

But with a move up to second place in Lancashire Amateur League Division One the reward for victory, Prestwich were undone by a mazy dribble and finish from the Accrington striker.

There was certainly a feel of two points dropped rather than one earned at the final whistle, despite Prestwich extending their unbeaten run to six matches, as they dropped back out of the promotion places into fourth.

Wide men Steve Murty and Mike Neary threatened early on, while Dave Thompson looked the most likely to score in the opening exchanges as he played off front man Sean Haslam.

Accrington conceded a number of free kicks on the edge of their area, but Thompson, Neary and David Prieto all failed to trouble the keeper from the resulting set pieces.

Prestwich were defensively solid, however, with Sam Holden and Richard Steadman both strong in the centre of defence as the two sides went into the break level.

The game was more open in the second half and Struminski, who had another fine game, gave Prestwich the lead on 70 minutes, bravely getting to a loose ball ahead of the keeper to stab it goalwards and it crossed the line just before a retreating defender could clear.

But the homes side switched off, letting an opposition midfielder go on a mazy run from just inside the Prestwich half and thread a ball through to the striker who finished low and hard past keeper Mike Hudson from 10 yards.

Prestwich went in search of a winner in a tense finale. Holden was desperately unlucky with a bullet header from a corner that went just over and Thompson, Haslam, Prieto and Murty all went close with shots or had powerful surges into the box blocked by last ditch tackles as Accrington held on for the point.
