A UKRAINIAN man suffered facial injuries and a cracked cheekbone after being set upon by a gang of youths while visiting his son in Prestwich.

Leonid Paradny (49), who was holidaying in the UK for the first time, was injured when the yobs tried to rob him in Broughton Park, on the boundary of Prestwich and Salford on May 2.

He was visiting his son Ross and decided to go for a walk in the early evening. Upon reaching Moor Lane, police said, Leonid was confronted by six young teenagers.

They identified him as a non-English speaker and began throwing stones and glass at him.

Luckily, a motorist saw what was going on and gave Leonid a lift to Singleton Road.

But two older boys on a bicycle, thought to be associated with the first group, chased him and tried to take his camera.

When Leonid resisted, he was assaulted at about 6pm.

After being punched three times in the face, Leonid managed to escape and make contact with Ross, who came to pick him up.

Bleeding heavily, Leonid was taken to Hope Hospital and had to have specialist treatment for his cheekbone back in the Ukraine.

The boys who attacked Leonid were described as white, aged between 16 and 19, with slim builds, between 5ft 10in and 6ft tall.

One was riding the bike while the other was standing up on the back of it. One boy had short, dark hair and a grey hoodie. The other had slightly longer, dark hair and was wearing a grey jumper with black stripes on it.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said: "We are investigating this unprovoked attack and attempted robbery and would appeal for any witnesses to come forward. No arrests have been made."
