THE recent sad death of footballing legend Ian St John, aged 82, prompted one reader to get in touch with some fond memories of the time the ex-Liverpool striker lent his support to Bury FC.
In 1985, Peter Dillon was social secretary of The Shakers’ Centenary Appeal Committee, and helped to organise a two-night stand at Bury FC Social Club by St John and his then TV partner, ex-Spurs, Chelsea and England star Jimmy Greaves.
The pair’s popular Saint and Greavsie show had begun broadcasting that year and would go on to run for seven years on ITV and is today fondly remembered by a whole generation of football fans.
On December 20, 1985, the Bury Times reported: “A capacity audience found themselves treated to almost non-stop one-liners, jokes and soccer stories which sent everyone home happy.”
