A PENSIONER has died after being hit by a car while crossing the road.

The 76-year-old man had been walking across St Margaret's Road in Prestwich heading towards the Heaton Park when he was hit by a red Vauxhall Combo MPV at around 4.15pm on Saturday.

The car had turned right into the road at the junction near to the park entrance before the collision.

Emergency services rushed to the scene and the pedestrian was taken to hospital where he died the following day.

The Vauxhall's 65-year-old female driver was unhurt.

Sergeant Brian Orr, of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “This is a tragic incident and our thoughts are with the man’s family at this difficult time.

"We have specialist officers supporting them whilst we investigate the circumstances of this collision."

Police say that enquiries are ongoing and are appealing for people to come forward with any information about the incident.

Sgt Orr added: “I am particularly interested in speaking to anyone who may have dash cam footage of the collision or was in the area at the time.

"If anyone has any information that can assist our enquiries, please come forward as soon as possible. Even the smallest detail could prove vital as we piece together exactly what happened.”
