A TEENAGER could become Bury’s youngest-ever councillor.

Tamoor Tariq, aged 19, has been selected by the Labour Party to contest the Redvales ward at next year’s local elections.

The Manchester University student, who is studying law and politics, came to prominence as a 16-year-old at a meeting of Bury East Area Board when he argued in favour of the continuing existence of Derby High School where he was head boy.

Mr Tariq, of Gigg Lane, has also campaigned to retain and expand funding for Bury Youth Service and the provision of better facilities. He has represented Bury as deputy member of Youth Parliament UK and is a member of the National Young Muslims Leadership Network.

The teenager has also worked in Salford MP Hazel Blear’s office as a communities campaign assistant.

The Redvales ward vacancy has arisen following the decision of Councillor Farook Chaudhry to stand down from Bury Council. An ex-mayor, he was the first Asian-heritage councillor in Bury.

Mr Tariq said: “I hope I will be able to play a pivotal role in the ward. I believe passionately in Redvales and its community.

“I’d also like to pay tribute to the staff at Derby High School. Without all their help and guidance, I woudn’t be where I am today.”

Ward councillor colleague, John Smith commented: “I’m really looking forward to working with Tamoor as he brings such enthusiasm and passion to his campaign.”

* Moorside Labour Party has selected Sandra Walmsley as a candidate for the local elections 2010.

Sandra, who lives in New Cateaton Street in the heart of the ward, is an active member and worker for the Communications Workers Union and is based at O2 in Bury.
