A new leaflet to make it easier for Muslim groups to understand how the burial service operates in Bury is now available.

The booklet has been produced by the local Muslim community, working in partnership with Bury Council's bereavement service.

The leaflet explains the different type of graves that can be purchased, such as timber, brick or concrete vaults.

It also gives details of how to book a burial, including arrangements for a weekend burial.

Memorials are governed by strict regulations which are available from the Bury Cemetery office.

Neil Long, Bury's assistant director for leisure, said: "We are pleased to have prepared the leaflet in partnership with the Muslim community. We want to make purchasing and booking a burial as straightforward as we can at a time which is both traumatic and stressful for families."

Mr Liaqat Ali, chairman of Bury Islamic Centre, commented: "The Muslim community is very grateful to Bury Council for providing the informative leaflet and we are pleased to work in partnership with the bereavement service regarding Muslim burials."

The new leaflet is being distributed by the Muslim community. However, copies of the leaflet and the cemetery regulations are available on request from the bereavement office, Bury Cemetery, St Peter's Road. Call (0161) 253 6510.
