STUDENTS at a school in Bury have celebrated their forthcoming return to lessons by planting 300 trees.
The new saplings were planted on the grounds of St Gabriel's Roman Catholic High School as part of the City of Trees project.
The organisers behind City of Trees are hoping to re-invigorate Greater Manchester’s landscape by restoring underused woodland and planting a tree for every person that lives in the City Region, within a generation.
It is hoped that around 3m trees will be planted with around 2,000 hectares of unmanaged woodland brought back into use for the community.
Headteacher Lisa Corrigan said: "St Gabriel’s students are looking forward to returning to school and a new beginning, starting with planting 300 trees as part of the City of Trees project.
"Bishop John Arnold is committed to our environment, so here at St Gabriel’s, we have planted our own fruit bearing orchard and will soon be planting new hedgerows to encourage wildlife back into our community.
"We are excited for the end of lockdown and to see our orchard develop."
