Police are appealing for information after a car was extensively damaged by a hammer near Rivington Gardens.

An incident happened around 2:30pm on Sunday afternoon where two groups of people were involved in an "altercation".

This altercation led to a car being "extensively damaged" by hammer.

Another car, which police believe to be a black Vauxhall Corsa, was then driven dangerously by a male in the car park, colliding with several other cars before fleeing the scene.

Chorley Police are now appealing for witnesses to come forward who saw the event unfold or who were there at the time and may have CCTV, dash cam, or mobile footage of the incident.

This comes after multiple police warnings to stay away from the Rivington area over the last couple of weekends due to icy weather conditions.

It also comes just over a week after police blasted the public for breaching coronavirus regulations after police described the area as "massively busy" on January 3.

Regarding the incident on Sunday, a Chorley Police spokesman said: "We are appealing for witnesses regarding an incident that occurred on Rivington Lane (leading to the barn) yesterday (Sunday January 10) at 2:30pm.

"Two groups of people were involved in an altercation which resulted in extensive damage to a car with the use of a hammer.

"Another car believed to be a black Vauxhall Corsa was driven dangerously by a male within the car park where it collided with several other cars before fleeing the scene.

"We are keen to trace any witnesses or any people who may have CCTV, dash cam or mobile footage of the incident. If so please email 2120@lancashire.police.uk

"Lastly we would like to reassure the public that this was an isolated incident and isn't the type of incident we are used to seeing in the Rivington area."
