Breaking into the Manchester music scene isn't an easy thing to do, but it helps a lot if you have the chance to collaborate with one of the city's biggest names, DJ and record producer Mr Scruff.

That's exactly what Bolton rapper and music producer Superlative, real name Corey Brown, got to do thanks to a project funded by the Arts Council England and Jagermeister.

Superlative, 24, was selected for the Co-Lab Theory project, run by the Manchester-based online radio station and arts organisation Reform Radio.

The project teamed up eight established figures from the music industry with eight upcoming artists to create a song, alongside eight visual artists producing an accompanying video.

Last week Superlative and Mr Scruff released their single 'Read All About It', with the animated video by videographer Rosie Eliza being released at a later date.

Mr Scruff, whose songs include 'Get a Move On' and 'Fish' said: “Corey (Superlative) was an absolute joy to work with.

"He had a lot of input into the music and we had a great time recording ideas and elements for the track.

"He has a strong sense of his own musical identity and is very comfortable and quick to get into the zone.”

For Superlative, who lives in Bolton Town Centre, the project gave him the opportunity to learn from one of the greats.

He's previously attended workshops with Reform Radio which is how he was selected for the project.

He said: "It was insane, at first I was worried that we would clash styles, but we worked well together and I was involved in the production side too.

"We had 16 hours together in total and worked on the song back in January. Initially he took me for some food so we could get to know each other, then we headed to his studio.

"We just started jamming together then refining what we had, it was a really different process, but very fun.

"I'm really happy with the song, it would be great to work with Mr Scruff in the future.

"A project like this is great for the mentor and the mentee, you both get to learn new things.

"It was great for me to work in a big studio like that, I was like a kid in a sweet shop and collaborating with Mr Scruff showed me that I'm on the right path.

"But coming from a younger generation I think I brought some things out of Mr Scruff too."
