INVESTIGATIONS are taking place after an assault which led to a man suffering serious injuries.

Police are investigating the incident that happened at about 10.20pm in Egremont on Sunday.

Two men are said to have engaged in an altercation on Main Street which led to a man in his 30s suffering serious injuries.

He was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle where is condition is described as stable.

A 26-year-old man from Egremont has been arrested on suspicion of assault GBH.

He remains detained in custody.
