TWO people have been "really seriously" injured in a "devastating" crash on the M60.

A 26-year-old woman and 30-year-old man had been travelling clockwise on the motorway when their silver Volkswagen Golf ploughed into a safety barrier and two lamp posts.

The incident happened at around 1.50am this morning between junction seven for Sale and eight for Carrington.

The female driver and male passenger were rushed to hospital for treatment to their injuries.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash, however, debris from the Golf was hit by other vehicles travelling on the motorway.

The motorway remains closed for recovery and repair work.

Police have now launched an investigation into the incident.

However, no arrests have yet been made, officers confirmed.

PC Darren White, of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “This was a devastating collision which resulted in a young woman and man sustaining really serious injuries. Our thoughts are with them as they remain in hospital.

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident and I appeal to anyone with information which may assist us or dash cam footage from the area at around the time of the collision to contact us.”

Following the incident a HGV also shed metal bars onto the carriageway at junction eight.
