CALLING all parents!

We know homeschooling can be tough work, but now the Easter holidays are here it has become an even bigger challenge to keep your children entertained during the coronavirus lockdown.

At the Warrington Guardian we want to do our bit to help, so we are launching our new Guardian Press Gang initiative which aims to get youngsters more engaged and involved with local news and their community.

As part of the young reporters’ scheme we would like your children to get in touch with us with their own news and pictures.

For example, they may want to describe life at home, how they are feeling and what they have been doing since schools closed.

They may wish to share pictures of their art projects or baking efforts, show their support for key workers and the NHS, or they may have some advice for other children about how they can cope during the crisis.

Perhaps they want to write their own local news story about something that has happened where they live. Whatever the reason, we want to read about it.

Five-year-old Logan Rees, from Sankey Bridges, created this rainbow of hope with his toys

Hayley Smith, Warrington Guardian editor, said: “Teachers have been doing a brilliant job of setting projects for their pupils during term time and beyond, but we hope our new Guardian Press Gang will be another way to help keep the boredom at bay over the coming weeks.

“My own household has two busy full time working parents, a 12-year-old settling into his first year at high school and a nine-year-old ready to enter his final year of primary school in September, so I’m fully aware of some of the demands on families at the moment.

“And at a time where local newspapers are so vital in keeping communities fully informed about what is happening during the coronavirus pandemic, it’s also important that our children are able to access the right kind of news and online content.

“We hope lots of children from across Warrington will be keen to get involved.”

We will be publishing as many contributions as possible in forthcoming editions of the Warrington Guardian, with those who have their work published receiving a thank you certificate.

We’ll also be asking teachers to share their own ideas and messages of support to pupils.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED:

  • The Guardian Press Gang scheme is open to both primary and high school pupils and you are able to submit more than once piece of work. To send in a contribution, email it to newsdesk@guardiangrp.co.uk with your contact details, the full name and age of your child and the school they attend, preferably with a photo of them too.
