THIS week’s delve into the picture archives at The Bolton News has unearthed this photograph of Tempest United from May 1991.

The information accompanying the picture says the team were Bolton Combination Open Cup winners that year but there is little else to go on.

Do you remember that team or recognise anyone pictured?

Did you play for Tempest at that time or have any other memories?

THE second picture of Old Smithillians football team from July 1988 was featured in last week's sporting nostalgia section.

Reader Gordon Fielding, who now lives in Leigh, got in touch with his memories.

He said: “I was there at the start and the end of Old Smithillians – as player and then manager after 20 years playing.

“I am on the photograph on the left in the wellies and the Mac and my son, Mark, is the little boy on the right.

“Most of that team were largely Smithills lads.

“The trophy we won, the Lancashire Amateur League Division Two title, was actually the original FA Cup, which I also won in 1970 as a player.

“Not many can say they have won the FA Cup as player and manager!

“The team was formed in 1963 from fifth form grammar school leavers by a guy called Ray Howard, who was the geography teacher at the time.

“In 1964 we entered the open-age LAL as a team of 17-year-old lads.

“We had some good times and plenty of success over the years but the club’s demise came in the 1990s when there were no players.”
