THIS week’s delve into the picture archives at The Bolton News has unearthed this photograph of St Dominic's football team from May 1981.

The information accompanying the picture says the team played in the Bolton Sports Federation Premier Division and were runners-up that year.

They are pictured before the final of the Bourne Trophy at Bromwich Street where they faced Cambrian.

Do you remember that team or recognise anyone pictured?

Did you play for the team at that time or have any other memories?

THE second picture is of the Bolton Under-14s town team from June 1984 which was published on October 11.

Team manager of the town team from 1983 to 1985, Dave Price, got in touch with his memories and said: "The photograph was of the Bolton Schools’ FA town team 1983-85, with the English Schools’ FA Woodward Trophy – the ESFA North West U14 Cup winners.

"This was the first time a BSFA squad had won an ESFA trophy.

"BSFA town teams had reached the semi-finals of the ESFA Inter Association Trophy – the Schoolboys’ FA Cup, in the 1920s, 1980s and 1990s without progressing to the national final.

"Town teams had more success in the ESFA North West trophies, reaching several finals in the 1970s and 80s.

"The previous 81-83 town team, including Paul Moulden, of Thornleigh College, (Manchester City, Bournemouth, Birmingham and Oldham) and Julian Darby, Bolton School (Bolton Wanderers, Coventry City, West Brom and Preston), both ESFA Schoolboy Internationals, had reached a North West final but like other BSFA sides, fell at the final hurdle.

"The 1983-84 U14 squad finally triumphed, beating St Helens Schools’ in the semi-final and local rivals Salford SFA 2-0 in the final.

"Ian Thompstone of Little Lever (Manchester City, Oldham, Exeter, Scunthorpe and Rochdale), second left on the front row, played a year young in this team and started in the final.

"Ian went on to score a goal for Manchester City, eight seconds after coming on as a substitute on his debut – what took him so long?

"This set of kit was the first we ever had sponsored – an ex-town team player was a high-up at Piccadilly Radio and we had their 261 logo on the shirts for the U15s' season.

"The publicity led to other companies getting involved – including (as then) The Bolton Evening News.

"Strangely enough, two of the boys also featured in the Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School picture below the town team photo.

"On the middle row, second from right is Jimmy Blair, of St Augustine’s, and next to him is school-mate goalkeeper Lee Kempster.

"Jimmy was one of three in the squad to gain Greater Manchester County SFA U15 honours the following season; he was also an ESFA International trialist.

"Next to Jimmy in the tracksuit top is Martin Dean of the Deane School, son of long-time commercial manager at BWFC, Andrew Dean.

"After the photoshoot at the Deane School, the squad signed the Mitre football in the picture – I still have it."
