COMPLAINTS have been made about the state of two roads in Radcliffe.

Carol Birchmore, a member of the Radcliffe First political party, has raised concerns about the “poor state” of Ainsworth Road and Pilkington Way.

She has written to Bury Council calling for action to be taken to improve the road surfaces.

Ms Birchmore, who stood as a candidate for Radcliffe West in the Bury local elections in May, said: “I have been chasing the council about the state of Radcliffe roads for a while. My main concern is about safety. I don’t want to have to wait for an accident to happen and for someone to get injured in order for something to be done about the very poor state of these roads.

“In some parts of Ainsworth Road there is no tarmac left. This really is quite dangerous. In Pilkington Way the road surface is also extremely poor.

“This issue is of massive concern to the residents. The potholes are particularly dangerous for cyclists and motorbikes."

Ms Birchmore, aged 55, has complained about the state of Ainsworth Road near the junction with Cemetery Road.

In 2018, Bury Council announced it would be spending £10m on roads, of which £8.5m would be spent on carriageway resurfacing, between 2017/18-2019/20.

Of 13 miles of road being resurfaced across the borough, 2.7 miles of improvements have been made in Radcliffe, at a cost of £1.6m.

A council spokesman said: "Bury Council takes the safety of all road users extremely seriously. All roads in the borough receive regular highway safety inspections, with any actionable defects being attended to. In addition, the wet skidding resistance of the surface is measured on an annual basis, which lets our engineers know whether interventions are required. Furthermore, collisions on the highway network are monitored to see if any trends are forming.

"Another £4.5m will be earmarked for resurfacing works between 2020/21-2022/23. Radcliffe is highly likely to have some roads included."

The local authority has already completed resurfacing works along sections of Church Street West, Coronation Road, Higher Ainsworth Road, Ainsworth Road, Outwood Road and Stand Lane.

Ms Birchmore says she has contacted Radcliffe councillors to organise a cross-party action committee to improve the roads.

She said: “I have recently found out that the council has no plans to do any resurfacing of any more roads in Radcliffe for the next two years. This means that, despite the surface of Ainsworth Road being very dangerous it will remain this way.

“The council did resurface Higher Ainsworth Road between Grindsbrook Road and Hardman Street but unfortunately this was not the worst section of the road.”
