A FATHER charged with the murder of his 11-month-old son has appeared in court.

Zak Eko, aged 22, of no fixed address, appeared at Manchester Magistrates' Court this morning.

He is charged with the murder of his baby son who died earlier this week.

Shortly before 4.25pm on Wednesday emergency services were scrambled to reports of a child in the River Irwell near to Blackburn Street in Radcliffe.

A baby boy was retrieved from the water and taken to hospital but died a short time later.

The boy has since been formally identified as 11-month-old Zakari William Bennett-Eko.

In the hearing at Manchester Magistrates' Court this morning, which lasted little over a minute, Eko appeared before Deputy District Judge Vincent McDade.

He was led to the dock dressed in a grey tracksuit top and bottoms and, flanked by members of the prison service, spoke only to confirm his name and that he is of no fixed address.

Eko has been remanded in custody to appear at Manchester Crown Court on September 16.
