A REGIMENT will be celebrating its links with County Durham with an event at the weekend.

The 8th Battalion The Rifles will take over Palace Green, in Durham, from 1pm to 5.15pm on Saturday.

Captain Steve Burton of the 8 Rifles said: “The Rifles is the successor regiment of the Durham Light Infantry and the Light Infantry and we have a rich history with County Durham.

“The free event, called Rifles in Durham, is to honour that relationship and also to celebrate the military in the city and also to inform people of our legacy.

“The event will include a host of activities for the family, including a climbing tower and people can come and look at the different types of equipment used in operations across the world.

“There will also be items on display from the Durham Light Infantry collection and the 68th Light Infantry reenactment group.”

Musical performances throughout the day from the Band and Bugles of the County Durham Army Cadet Force will culminate in a Sounding Retreat, from about 4.30pm to 5.15pm.
