CHILDREN damaged four cars travelling on the M66 while throwing 'boulders' off a motorway bridge.

North West Motorway Police shared a picture of a car with a smashed windscreen which had been hit by a stone thrown from the East Lancashire Railway Bridge at Heywood between junctions two and three.

Officers said on Twitter: "Children are on a bridge above the motorway throwing boulders onto unsuspecting passing motorists, this time no one was injured or at worst lost their life.

"Four vehicles in total have damage."

The incidents happened on Wednesday evening and police officers urged parents to watch their children.
