TOMMY Robinson is in Bury town centre today with campaigners.

A big screen on the back of a truck saying “Vote Tommy” has been set up in The Rock.

His supporters are giving out flyers as he speaks to members of the public.

Mr Robinson is standing as an independent candidate for the North West in the European Parliament elections.

Local leaders have said that the far-right figure’s presence is not welcome in the town.

Bury Times:

Bury North MP James Frith said: “The people of Bury believe in hope not hate. There is no place in our town for those who sow such division. Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, or Tommy Robinson as he likes to call himself, will not succeed in dividing our brilliant and diverse communities, who live and work side by side and show in action every day that we are stronger together.”

Council leader Rishi Shori said: "Whilst we respect Mr Robinson's right to campaign for election in a free and fair society, his presence in Bury is certainly not welcome.

“As a borough we pride ourselves on our rich diversity, with people from many different faiths and backgrounds living side by side. It is part of what makes the borough such a great place to live.

“The majority of the borough's residents will reject what he stands for which is a message of hate and intolerance with his sole objective to divide our communities rather than bringing them together."

Bury’s Lib Dem leader Tim Pickstone agreed with Cllr Shori saying that Mr Robinson’s “message of hate and intolerance” is not welcome in the town.
