YOUNG people from across Bury have been honoured for their contribution to the annual Royal British Legion poppy collection.

During a special presentation at Bury Town Hall, the Mayor of Bury, Cllr Jane Black, and Col Eric Davidson thanked the Sea Cadet Corps, the Bury Detachment of the Army Cadet Force and 1036 Squadron, Air Cadets and representatives of the Scouts and Bury College for the huge part they played in helping Bury to raise £78,966.22.

Col Davidson said: "Bury has punched above its weight in terms of the generosity of its residents and the hard work of all the poppy collectors."

The Mayor was especially grateful for the contribution from the cadet forces.

She said: "They represent a change from all the negative headlines about youths by showcasing the very positive attitudes of many of today’s young people."

The Air Cadets raised £1,603, the Sea Cadets raised £2,578 and the Army Cadets raised £7,054.

The Rock shopping centre gave vouchers to the cadets from each of the services who had collected the most money.

Reg Sgt Maj Doug Craddock was awarded a special medal to recognise his 30 years’ service to the Poppy Appeal with the Army Cadet Force.
