SHOPPERS at a Prestwich cooperative can now go hopping mad after the store unveiled its latest planet-saving retail innovation.

Village Greens Community Co-op has this week launched its new zero-waste hopper system which dispenses a range of stock from dried fruits and seeds, to beans, pulses, and pasta.

The system is designed to help customers reduce waste by buying only what they need and reusing containers.

On Thursday a special launch party was held at the shop, which is located at the Longfield Centre, where shoppers and guests could get a first look at the hoppers, enjoy music and refreshments, and take advantage of a discount on the dispensed items.

Store manager, Chris Williams said: “We are trying to provide a ‘less-waste’ alternative for our customers and by spreading the items we have in them people can have the opportunity of a plastic free shop here in store. The response from shoppers has been really good and it brings a nice look to the store.”

Village Greens say the hopper system will compliment the store’s existing refill options, which include a range of goods from washing up liquid and hand soap, to surface cleaner and rapeseed oil.

It also fits with their push for plastic free shopping, with many of their items such as fruits and vegetables coming without or with compostable packaging.

Mr Williams said: “We have always been an ethical shop in the way we purchase goods, how we try to source local where possible, and trade with a conscience; and that’s what sets us apart from the big supermarkets.

“David Attenborough has brought to everyone’s attention how important it is to cut down on single use plastics and it’s something I personally believe in as do all of the team here. So we are trying to do what we can.”
