DIGNITARIES, members of Greater Manchester Police, and people from across the region came together today at a special ceremony to remember the victims of the Holocaust and other genocides for Holocaust Memorial Day.
The event, held at the GMP headquarters in Monsall, welcomed Prestwich Holocaust survivors Ruth and Werner Lachs who shared their incredible stories of resilience and escape.
Mrs Lachs is known to history as a “hidden child” of the Holocaust, whose story of survival covers several countries, separation from loved ones and heroism from people of all faiths who helped to save her life.
Her husband Werner’s story saw him escape from Nazi Germany, which later found to have been made possible thanks to a courageous MI6 agent — who was posthumously honoured by the Duke of Cambridge.
The afternoon also saw prayers led by Chazan Modi Spitzer from Bury Hebrew Congregation, and the lighting of six candles — one of each of the millions who died in the Holocaust.
