A CHURCH congregation in Bury has established a new community centre to support people in need.

Members of Metro Christian Centre have launched a new service to support residents of all ages from all walks of life.

Trust House has been established at an existing community centre in Whitefield as a safe place to go, somewhere to find company, and to receive food or other help.

Visitors will be able to access a free café, charity shop and a variety of classes, ranging from English and Maths to cookery and home economics.

Katie Jenkinson, centre manager, said: "Trust House is open to all, offering free support, advice and guidance to those in need.

"We have a real heart for people and want to see significant change in the lives of people in and around Whitefield.

"Trust House is a safe place to go for food, company or help."

Trust House officially opened its doors at Victoria Community and Youth Centre, in Charles Street, on Monday, January 7. The congregation at Metro Christian Centre was already using the site for its church meetings and Sunday worship prior to opening.

These existing links led to the church being approached by The Oglesby Charitable Trust about establishing a new venture to serve the people living on Victoria Estate and in surrounding areas.

Currently, the centre is being staffed by between two and five volunteers for four days each week. Plans are also under way to establish Trust House as a charity.

Mrs Jenkinson said: "Our mission is to transform local communities by building relationships and breaking down barriers. We want to see real and long-lasting change in the lives of those in need."

Trust House has four key values: 'we care, we listen, we act, and we aim to provide four-tier support: providing basic support and emergency care, promoting self-sufficiency, preparing individuals to re-enter the wider community, and encouraging participation in the local area through volunteering and paid employment.

The centre is open every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday between 10am and 2pm.
