A MUCH-LOVED pastime is making a welcome return to playgrounds across the borough - and youngsters are going hopping mad for it.

Pupils from Mersey Drive Primary School in Whitefield are the latest children to have a go at skipping thanks to a clever idea from Bury Council.

They have brought in the services of skipping expert George Kubu, who works with children to teach them how it can improve their co-ordination, fitness and teamwork.

After he called in for a session at Mersey Drive last Friday, deputy headteacher Karen Race said the children were buzzing.

"I used to skip when I was at school and it's a shame that the trend has died out. We had children from the nursery all the way up to Year 6 doing all the tricks and playing different games and they loved it," said Mrs Race.

She added: "It has proved a good foundation for some skipping sessions of our own that we are going to have at lunchtimes, which we think we will benefit some of the pupils who aren't necessarily brilliant at PE, but have found something they enjoy and that enables them to communicate well with their friends."
