Bury North is what pollsters call a key marginal and elections are won and lost on vote swings between the main parties in such constituencies.
In fact only about nine per cent of all constituencies have changed in their representation in Parliament in the last five General Elections, apart from in 1997.
Yet how can Bury voters help save the nation and what are we saving the nation from?
Economists predict that we will borrow as a nation about £200 billion for each of the next three years, which means that the interest payments alone will amount to as much as the Government spends on the entire defence budget.
“Who lends us all this money?”, I hear you ask.
A lot comes from huge investment companies in the USA and they are getting extremely nervous because Brown won’t shut up about ‘spending’. They have the power to declare that the UK is a bad credit risk and ask for much higher interest payments, or ask for their money back, now!
It’s a case of when and not if they will ‘pull the plug’, signalling to the world that the UK is virtually insolvent.
What this will mean is that some public services will run out of money, like wages! The pound could go into freefall and interest rates will soar, making mortgages unaffordable and throwing even more people out of work. Most unpalatable of all is knowing that this could mean stealing from our children’s prosperity to stay solvent now.
As the Shadow Chancellor observed, “when you are on the wrong road you take the first available exit”.
Well you will soon have the power, Bury voters, to make that important turn.
