CONGRATULATIONS to all who received qualifications at the University of Bolton this year – to the ordinary students like my clever daughter, Lucy, to the more famous honorary doctorates like Sam Allardyce and actor Frank Finlay.

This year’s ceremony was extra-special as Baroness Morris of Bolton — the deputy speaker of the House of Lords — was also officially made the university’s first Chancellor, bringing her own brand of charm and infectious enthusiasm to the day. She paid tribute to the “friendly and unstuffy” university itself, which is great validation for all the hard work that led to it coming into being and its ongoing success.
