All the Conservative councillors opposed climate change vote

The article on the events of November’s council meeting (New Year edition) concentrates on the Chief Executive’s letter about councillors’ behaviour that followed it, rather than on the debate which caused the problems in the first place.

In that debate, Liberal Democrats in Bury asked the council to support the 10:10 climate change campaign, which commits supporters to a 10 per cent CO2 reduction in 2010.

Signatories to the campaign include hundreds of other councils and tens of thousands of individuals, not to mention businesses, the Liberal Democrats in Bury and nationally, and many others.

All Greater Manchester Councils, except Bury, have signed up to the campaign, in fact.

Despite Labour support for the Liberal Democrat proposals, the Conservatives opposed them.

This was a disgraceful move, rejecting this chance to show a clear commitment to tackling CO2 emissions, and rejecting the opportunity to join a concerted national campaign.

It sent out a terrible message to the people of Bury, far worse in its long term consequences than any poor behaviour in the wake of the vote.

Every one of the Conservative councillors in Bury voted against 10:10.

Voters should consider that.
