‘Performing well’ — but how well in comparison with old district councils?

SIX Town Housing play Santa Claus by giving two weeks’ free rent on its housing, so we read in the papers, which we all know is not true.

Council tenants pay extra every week in the year to cover these two weeks over the Christmas period, so the rent is paid for in advance, but I suppose it makes them sound good.

They do donate monies to events, residents’ associations, education, clean up estates, etc etc, in fact seem to go outside their purpose, which I thought was housing.

I do read a lot of news, letters, booklets, pamphlets etc, telling everyone how good they are. It must cost a fortune to blow their own trumpet.

But like all self praise from Bury Council, the public know the truth.

I read that volunteers clean up the ex-Whitefield town hall grounds and Philips Park —are we not covered by Bury Council? These areas are a disgrace, they were always well maintained under Whitefield Council.

Like the recent snow and ice clearing, in the past every member of the workforce who was available was put on clearing and gritting, and as such the OAP bungalows, schools, shopping areas, etc were clear — but nowadays under our modern Bury Council, who we read from the Audit Commission is performing well — we are sorry to say events over the years do not match the reports. In fact many services have gone worse.

It is best to take a step backwards — but not at the moment as of course you will break your neck on untreated paths and roads — and look how the old urban district councils managed services.

But then, of course, the tax and rates were spent in the local councils where they were collected, not in Bury.
