Measures to ensure safety of passengers on the Metrolink

I was sorry to hear about your reader’s son’s experience on Metrolink (‘Son was assaulted on tram but where were the police?,’ June 4, 2009).

I would like to take the opportunity to emphasise the measures that we have in place to ensure the safety of Metrolink passengers.

Metrolink has a 66-strong team of Travel Safe Officers who patrol the Metrolink network from early in the morning until the last tram at night, seven days a week. They provide a security presence on the system and can be called to incidents as needed.

There are help points on trams for passengers to speak to the driver if an incident occurs when a Travel Safe Officer is not onboard. There are also emergency call points on Metrolink platforms for people to speak directly to the Metrolink control room.

The control room can respond immediately to any incidents and will contact Greater Manchester Police and deploy Travel Safe Officers quickly where they are needed.

All trams and stops are covered by continuously-recorded CCTV and I encourage any passengers who witness anti-social behaviour to contact Metrolink Customer Services directly with the details on 0161 205 2000 so that we can help catch the culprits.

Incidents of anti-social behaviour on the tram network actually fell last year and I assure passengers we will continue to work hard to make sure Metrolink remains a safe way to travel.
