IN reply to the letter from Don Mackenzie, of Walmersley, which appeared on the Letters page August 19 and which refers to work on Walmersley Road, Bury. It is clear that Mr Mackenzie has misunderstood the council’s motives for investing in road safety improvements on Walmersley Road. Whilst the scheme he refers to does include cycle lanes, the provision of these is only one of the benefits provided rather than the motivation for the project which Mr Mackenzie infers. The scheme has been designed to improve road safety for all users, particularly the more vulnerable, including pedestrians and cyclists, and has been initiated to address a recognised collision problem. In a recent three year period, a total of 10 personal injury collisions were recorded within the scheme length which resulted in 15 casualties, including two reported as serious. This information was included in consultation documents distributed in May, 2009, which invited residents of Walmersley Road to express their views about the proposed improvements. Sixty-two per cent of residents who responded indicated full support for the proposed scheme which was subsequently endorsed by the Ramsbottom, Tottington and North Manor Local Area Partnership on July 22, 2009. The final cost of the scheme is expected to be approximately £55,000, which is fully justified by the potential casualty savings which should be achieved.
