Hero Riley returns to Tigers

SEDGLEY Park have added another familiar name to the squad for the 2009-10 campaign, with Matt Riley putting pen to paper for another season at Park Lane.

Riley played a crucial role in Lancashire’s County Cup success, scoring the Red Rose side’s final try in the 32-18 defeat of Gloucestershire at Twickenham to get their hands once more on the Bill Beaumont Cup.

The 22-year-old full back, centre or wing represented England at both Under-18 and U21s level, including impressive performances in the U21s World Cup in 2006.

Riley began his career with Sale Sharks, appearing in both the Guinness Premiership and Powergen Cup, in addition to 35 Guinness A League games for the Sale Jets, skippering the side during the 2007-2008 season.

He went out on loan to Rotherham before making his way to Park Lane where his loan agreement was made permanent after some excellent displays in the claret and gold.

With the 2008-9 season barely finished the Tigers will be back in training at the end of this month, being put through their paces on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings prior to thenew season kicking-off on September 5, when they pay a first ever visit to the Richmond Athletic Ground to face newly-promoted London Scottish.

Before then the club has penciled in three pre-season friendlies.

They are due to face a Sale Sharks XV on either August 11 or 12 and Cardiff-based Glamorgan Wanderers on Saturday August 22 — both those games at Park Lane — before entertaining National Three North side Macclesfield, coached by former Sedgley backs coach Andy Northey on Saturday, August 29 – venue to be confirmed. The dates for all three games are as yet provisional.
