RUGBY UNION: Sedgley Tigers have double cause to celebrate Lancashire’s Bill Beaumont cup triumph at Twickenham.
Not only did Tigers’ players score two of the Red Rose county’s three tries in their 32-18 win over Gloucester, Lancashire skipper Steve Nutt has decided to re-sign for Sedgley for the 2009-10 season.
At 6ft and 14st, he can play both fly-half and fullback and it is that versatility that appealed to Tigers’ chief executive, Geoff Roberts.
“We’re trying to develop strength in depth and Nutty provides that, as he can play both 15 and ten and is also a good place-kicker,” he said.
“We’ve re-signed him predominantly as a fullback, but we know that if we hit injury problems at fly-half he can slot in there, so he offers us a number of options.”
In addition to county honours Nutt has representative experience with Scotland Under-18s and 19s, along with English Students.
After two seasons with Moseley and three with Waterloo he joined the Tigers for the 2007-8 campaign.
However, once injured skipper Phil Jones recovered his fitness Nutt found his first team opportunities limited and initially went on loan to Fylde before spending the whole of last season at Woodlands. Not surprisingly, he topped the club’s points scoring with 216 (9 tries, 45 conversions and 27 penalties) and finished fifth in the National Three North points list.
At Twickenham, Tigers’ flanker Juan Crous gave Lancashire the lead with a sixth-minute touchdown, a move started by club mate Matt Riley’s strong drive.
Sedgley will open the new season on Saturday, September 5, with a first ever visit to the Richmond Athletic Ground to take on promoted London Scottish, who could be led by current British and Irish Lions’ head coach, Ian McGeechan.
