SEDGLEY Tigers put another bogey side to rest on Saturday as they maintained their winning start to the National Two North season.

Geoff Roberts' men won 33-22 at Preston Grasshoppers, following up from their opening-day victory at home to Caldy.

They lost to both sides last season and the Sedgley coach is now keen to put another old foe - Otley - to the sword this weekend to complete the hat-trick.

"You could say that we are already up on last season," said Roberts, as he aims to go one better after his side finished runners-up behind Macclesfield in National Two North last season.

"We have had two wins against two teams that have been our bogey sides in the past.

"Caldy beat us home and away last season and we have lost at Preston in the past two campaigns.

"Both wins would have boosted our chances (of the title) last year, or at least put more pressure on Macclesfield (who won the title by 15 points).

"But we can't look to the past, our focus has to be on building on this good start in our next game.

"Our games against Otley are always pretty tight.

"Home or away, there is normally only a couple of points in it.

"We did the double over them last year, but we only sneaked it at their place, winning with a try in the last play of the game.

"That was unusual, as it tends to be the home side that normally wins our matches, but we know we will have to be on our guard to keep this good start going."

Sedgley are one of four teams sharing the lead at the top of the table, with Sale FC, Stourbridge and Leicester Lions also claiming one bonus point and two wins from their opening two matches.

The Tigers could and probably should have enjoyed a more comfortable afternoon at Preston after going 33-3 up inside the hour.

Roberts was impressed with his side's performance before they lost their concentration following a prolonged injury stoppage.

"It is hard to say whether we lost our concentration or the stoppage just broke our momentum," he said.

"One of their players suffered a bad concussion and it must have taken 15 minutes to treat him.

"We made a few substitutions and we were unable to regain our focus after that, but up to that point we were really comfortable and put in a great performance."

Matt Riley burst on to a short pass and hammered through the Preston defence to open the scoring on 20 minutes.

Within two minutes Sedgley had doubled their tally as Richard Wainwright fed winger Sam Lowthian to finish off the try of the game.

A penalty try for the Tigers completed a nine-minute burst of scoring before Prestwon converted a penalty to make the score 21-3 at half time.

Andy Riley ran in Sedgley's fourth try of the game five minutes into the second half to secure the bonus point and Johnny Matthews touched down what proved to be their final score of the game after a driving maul inside the hour mark.
