SEDGLEY Tigers believe this weekend will give them a clearer idea of what kind of season lies ahead.

The Whitefield men’s dominant 29-17 home victory over Sheffield Tigers on Saturday made it two wins and one defeat from their opening three games in National League Two North.

Since being relegated last season, Sedgley have been feeling their way in the lower division, so far unsure of exactly what the standard is going to be.

Manager Geoff Roberts has been impressed by what he has seen, saying it is better quality than the last time they were in this division several years ago.

And he believes they will get a better idea after Saturday’s game, again at Park Lane, against a Macclesfield side who were relegated with them last spring and who have won all three games this season.

“It is one of our main derbies,” he said, looking forward to the biggest occasion so far this term.

“Both came down last season so if you are to pick a juicy game it would be against Macc.

“They have won all of their first three games so you could say they will be pushing for promotion this season.”

And Roberts is anticipating a hard-fought game.

“Their play is very forward orientated and their coach likes to get a big pack and play in the pack.”

Sedgley had little trouble disposing of the other Tigers team from across the Pennines on Saturday.

Tries from Matthew Lampey and Ben Black and two conversions and a penalty from Steve Collins gave them a 17-5 half-time lead before Juan Crous and Callum McShane added further tries, one converted by Collins, in the second half.

“We did okay but we should have won by a lot more,” said Roberts.

“We weren’t able to finish off chances that were well created.

“But it was a good day, and we gave our new signing Mike Waywell 30 minutes at the end, and he looks a good player.

“We were applying long periods of pressure without finishing things off like I thought we could have done.

“We need to get another couple of weeks under our belt to find out which teams are going to be the ones up there near the top.

“From what I’ve seen so far this division is like all the divisions in that they are all getting better.

“It is better now than it was before and the division above has got better.”
