RHYS ‘Lightning’ Roberts is determined to strike down his opponent on Saturday night – and make it a perfect 10 in the process.
Whitefield super-bantamweight Roberts is fighting at the sold-out Castle Leisure Centre in Bury and he is hoping to extend his unblemished fight record, which currently stands at nine victories.
He is yet to find out his opponent but he is stepping up to six rounds for the first time as he bids to start climbing the rankings.
The 20-year-old believes he is in the shape of his life and has credited a change in preparation for his new found strength and confidence.
“I started working with a former bodybuilder and nutritionist called Brian Goddard about a year ago,” said Roberts, who has now adopted the nickname Rhys Lightning.
“I did this off my own bat and it is paying off. I do extra strength and conditioning and the knowledge he has given me has made me 100 per cent better.
“I am on a new diet and I always make the weight easy and feel stronger for it. My physique has changed for the better and it should lead to me to becoming a much better boxer.”
Roberts fought for the first time in seven months on April 10 and he believes the points victory over durable Latvian Pavels Senkovs will stand him in good stead this weekend.
“I feel brilliant,” said Roberts, who was sidelined over the winter months with a hand injury which has now fully healed. “I am making up for lost time now. I got rid of the rustiness and have been training hard.
“I have been sparring with much bigger fighters and that has helped to prepare me for this one.
“It is my first six rounder but I know I have enough in the tank. I realise that I have only one knockout in my career but that is not something that concerns me.
“I like to get the rounds under my belt because that is how you get experience. And I know that one day I will be pushed all the way over 12 rounds and I have to be ready for that.
“So far I have been put in with some tough fighters and I have never really been tested. I have won every one of my fights convincingly and I hope that continues.”
