BOXING: Whitefield teenager Rhys Roberts is confident his new alliance with Ricky Hatton will lead to an exciting future.
The 19-year-old super-bantamweight has signed up with Hatton Promotions, and makes his debut for his new employees on Saturday at Altrincham Leisure Centre.
The Collyhurst and Moston Lads Club ace has a 100 per cent record from his six fights to date, and he hopes his new partnership with the Hitman will prove to be fruitful.
“For someone of Ricky’s stature to invest his time and money into me is a great honour and means so much,” said Roberts, who doesn’t know his opponent yet. “I am going to make sure I repay him through my performances.
“I hope it will lead to more regular fights for me because that is what I need to keep progressing.
“If I can keep winning regular fights, I can start moving up the ladder and thinking about a title fight.” Roberts knows he has to impress the watching Hatton, but he is boosted by the seal of approval from the man himself.
“Ricky came to watch me and Scott Quigg spar and he said he rates us highly,” said Roberts. “I have got a good deal with him and I want to shine and put on a good show on Saturday.
“I am feeling sharp, have been training hard and I am fit as a fiddle.
“I just need to impress my style on my opponent and I should be OK.”
