Parry salutes local heroes


OLYMPIC swimming medalist Steve Parry presented awards to Bury’s sporting heroes at this year’s annual awards.

The former Great Britain swimming captain handed out the prizes at the ceremony at Bury Town Hall.

The sports achiever of the year award went to Alexandra Fitton from Salle Kiss Fencing Club for her international fencing success, while disability sports achiever of the year was paralympic gold medalist Zoe Robinson, a member of the Great Britain boccia team at the Beijing Paralympics.

Volunteer of the year was Lianne Dooley, a YWCA Bury Junior Netball Club coach, and coach of the year was Robert Kiss, an international fencing coach.

YWCA Netball Club also scooped the club of the year award, while community worker Harry Reed was named unsung hero of the year.

The Prestwich special recognition award went to the chairman of Prestwich Heys Juniors, Alex Bamford for his dedication in merging two football clubs while the Radcliffe special recognition award was presented to Sylvia Davenport for her loyalty and dedication to sports for more than 50 years. Sylvia has spent 11 years as secretary of Bury and District Rounders League and is also the vice chairman of Radcliffe and Bury South Sports Forum Lowercroft Primary School and St Monica’s High School took the school awards and Jonathan Taylor, a Whitefield-based percussionist with the Besses Boys’ Band won the inaugural music achiever of the year award. Winners of the top six categories will go on to represent Bury at the Greater Manchester Sports Awards on March 27.
