We can still win the league, says Freakes
PETER Freakes is refusing to rule out the possibility of his Prestwich Heys side winning an unprecedented fourth Manchester Premier League title in a row.
Seventh-placed Heys have games in hand on four of the six teams above them in the league, and lie just six points from the summit.
Confidence has been restored by two hard-fought victories, and now Heys manager Freakes is challenging his players to see how close they can get to lifting another title.
"We have got eleven games left - that's a third of the season," said Freakes. "There's 33 points to play for, and although it's asking a lot to pick up all 33, we are trying to win every game and see where it takes us.
"We have been focusing on defending better, and passing the ball better in training and that seems to be paying off."
Freakes has now had time to have a look at the players he has inherited, and he is confident he has the talent at his disposal if it is complemented by consistency.
"Different players have impressed me at different times," said Freakes. "I just want them to do it all the time.
"Elliot Bernstein has done very well in goal, while Marvin Walters has been fantastic for me. He is a bit of a stalwart in this team.
"I am also excited by the potential of Sam Smith. He is 19, and had only played six times for the first-team before I came here. He has played every game under me.
"Sam was released by Bury, and it's obvious he is a good player."
Smith's form has attracted the attentions of some bigger clubs, and Freakes admits he won't be afraid of helping one of his players further their careers.
"If the players are good enough, I don't mind recommending them to different clubs," said Freakes.
