Gutsy Ammies earn shield win

Wythenshawe Town 2 Bury Amateurs 3

BURY produced a dogged performance to progress to the quarter-finals of the Bridgwater Manchester League Murray Shield in an enthralling clash with a much-improved Wythenshawe, who finished the game with nine men after having two players sent off.

The Ammies started well and were gifted the lead on five minutes when one of many crosses from the right, where Thomas repeatedly linked with Bushby and Bruce, was turned into his own net by the home centre half.

But they failed to cash in on their good fortune and allowed Wythenshawe to get into their stride. It took good saves from returning keeper Gav Campbell and some desperate defending to keep them out but they eventually forced an equaliser from a sustained attack to make it 1-1 at the change round.

Bruce put the Ammies back in front on the hour when he held off a couple of challenges before chipping the keeper.

Wythenshawe responded once more and were level again with a scrambled effort 20 minutes from time.

Blake re-established the lead for Bury, smashing home a pull-back by Bruce who had made a great run down the right but this time Town’s response was handicapped by a lack of discipline which saw two men rightly sent off.

Progress to the next round of the Shield was a big confidence boost ahead of this weekend’s league clash at home to unbeaten Monton Amateurs.
