Prestwich Heys 2 Chapel Town 3 (After extra time) Gilgryst Cup 1st round
HEYS suffered a heartbreaking exit from the cup after twice leading in normal time.
Mark Slater’s men flew out of the blocks and were ahead within a minute when Jimmy Morley finished a move after swapping passes with Jamie Treanor.
They came close to doubling their advantage on 10 minutes when more slick passing allowed Treanor to set up Sam Smith, who volleyed just wide from 25 yards.
It was a marvellous start for Heys but Royton did well to regroup and come back strongly.
The pace of the visiting strikers caused trouble for the Heys defence and Jonathan Hunter and Danny Rose both picked up cautions for impeding the Town centre forward.
It was a sign of things to come from a referee who seemed to be unwilling to let the game flow.
Heys were grateful to the reactions of keeper Ian Outram as he made at least two good saves from decent Royton chances.
But he was powerless to prevent the equaliser when it came on the half hour after a misplaced pass allowed the visitors’ right winger to cut in to rifle the ball home with his left foot.
Heys retook the lead in counter-attacking fashion on 78 minutes. After a Royton corner was cleared the ball was moved quickly to Morley who drove forward before picking out Tom Stubbs in the box and his delayed cutback was perfect for the on-rushing Treanor who finished smartly to the bottom corner.
Just as it looked like Heys were going to hold out for a hard-fought win, Royton grabbed a dramatic equaliser at the death. An excellent cross was swung in and met with a firm header which Outram did fantastically well to keep out, but the Heys defence was caught flat-footed as a visiting forward pounced on the loose ball.
Hey were on top in the second period of extra-time but as they failed to press home their advantage it semed inevitable that Royton would grab a winner, which came five minutes from time — a scrambled effort after a dangerous cross from the left.
