BRACES for Dan Murray and Sam Smith and a header from John Monks sealed an emphatic win on the road at Pennington as Heys moved back up to ninth in the Premier Division.
Pennington started brightly against an in-form Heys who soon stamped their authority on the game when Chris Jepson’s header was scrambled clear, before Murray stayed strong to hold off his marker and poke his side into a 19th minute lead.
Midfielder Smith then turned on the style with a quickfire brace to take the game away from the hosts – first side-footing in to the corner before dancing through the Pennington defenders and slamming home from the edge of the box just two minutes later.
Pennington got their foot back in the door with a long-range curler that flew in to Paul Murphy’s top corner in the 36th minute.
And they were a whisker away from pulling a second goal back soon after, with another strike from distance that was expertly touched on to the crossbar by the alert Murphy.
Pennington continued to probe in the second half and should have done better in the 50th minute when a shot on the turn rolled wide with Murphy out on the edge of his area.
But Heys were not letting this one slip and killed the game off when Jon Monks headed in Jepson’s free-kick – not that the defender knew too much about it as the ball found its way over the line off the back of his head.
Murray completed the scoring in the final minute as the striker raced through on his own and finally netted the fifth at the second attempt.
