Standians 1 Stand Athletic 6, Manchester League Division One

STAND grabbed the Whitefield bragging rights with an emphatic 6-1 win. Latics were forced to make a couple of changes from last week with Buckley and Newton unavailable. So Danny Smith and Andy Smith were recalled to the starting line-up.

Stand started brightly and took the lead on 10 minutes when Ashley Hoolighan flicked a header into the path of Danny Smith, who lashed an unstoppable left-foot shot past the keeper.

The visitors were reduced to 10 men when captain Paul Lyons tangled with a Standians striker.

The referee deemed the controntation to be violent conduct and showed Lyons the red card.

Even a man down, Stand were much the better side and on 25 minutes increased their lead.

A free kick from Danny Smith was parried by the keeper straight to the feet of Bernard Morley who smashed it home to make it 2-0.

Stand continued to press forward and got a third on 35 minutes when a superb cross from full back Pete Morley was superbly headed home by Hoolighan.

Latics then made it 4-0 right on half-time, Bernard Morley again following up a save from the keeper to coolly slot it home. The second half began with a lot of pressure from Standians and they finally got their reward on 60 minutes with a good strike from the edge of the box.

In recent weeks Stand have finished games strongly and even with only 10 men they did it again.

Sean Jackson made it 5-1 with a cool finish after rounding the keeper, but the last word was left to Bernard Morley, who lobbed the keeper from 25 yards to complete his hat-trick.

Stand manager John Arnold was full of praise after the game: “The attitude and committment was first class.

“Even when we went down to 10 men we were by far the better side and the scoreline was fully deserved.”

Latics travel to top-of-theleague Dukinfield Town on Saturday, kick-off 2pm.

All players to meet at The Cross Keys at 12.15 pm.
