Prestwich begin with a defeat
REIGNING champions Prestwich CC started the new league season in traditional fashion - with a loss.
The Heys side have an uncanny and unwanted knack of losing their opening game and Flowery Field were the beneficiaries this time.
Last year, Prestwich only lost one other league game after an opening day defeat to Dukinfield, and they will be hoping to make quick amends on Saturday when they face Denton West on home soil.
It was a very disappointing result for the Heys boys, who were missing former skipper Steve Orrell through illness, and despite the fact that a strengthened Flowery side could be amongst the challengers for the title.
Batting first, the Prestwich top order made steady progress but none of the top four were able to carry it through to a big score.
Mike Hudson (24), pro Viraj Perera (15), Ian Walker (16) and Chris Thomas (28) failed to capitalise on their solid starts and only skipper Steven Lorenzini reached double figures (14 not out).
Needing to surpass a total of 113, Flowery could take their time despite some tight bowling.
Phil Kyle's opening six-over burst conceded just four runs and Pete Walters was the man to get the breakthrough with the score on 59, as Mark Hawley was caught by Kyle.
When John Kerambrum bowled pro Gleave for 42 with the score on 86, Prestwich staged a late rally with Chris Humphreys at the forefront, taking 3-21.
Lorenzini also sent back Scott for a duck, but despite taking six wickets, a lacklustre, first-half performance proved Heys' undoing.
On Sunday, Prestwich face a trip to Westhoughton in the first round of the Cockspur Cup.
