Cup tie victory for Prestwich

LANCASHIRE County League double winners Prestwich began their Lancashire Cup campaign with a six wicket victory at Great Harwood.

It was an encouraging performance by the visitors following the loss of pro Craig Duxbury and Andrew Taylor.

Their places have been taken by Sri Lankan pro Viraj Perera, who notched a useful 26, and John Kerambrum form Euxton in the Manchester Association.

The Ribblesdale League hosts won the toss and took first knock on what was bound to be a tricky wicket after the recent wet weather.

Oliver Holt sufferred a back problem when bowling his first ball and Phil Kyle took over to continue where he left off last year, taking the first wicket with the score on 13, trapping Houldsworth leg before then removing the other opener Noon thanks to Humphreys safe hands at mid wicket.

Perera took a couple of overs to find the correct line and length for English wickets, but he settled down well and his last four overs went for just six runs.

Whalley and pro Shahabuddin took the score to 50 before the latter played across the line to Kerambrum to give him his first Prestwich wicket.

Humphreys was again found by Whalley at a deeper mid wicket to leave the home team on 70-4.

Captain Armer had been putting bat to ball and he hit five sixes in a quick-fire 60 not out. Wicketkeper Allen scored just seven in a 52 run partnership before he was out lbw to Peter Walters, who bowled an excellent spell at the end of the innings, conceding only 19 off his six overs. At the end of the allotted 30 overs Great Harwood had scored 128-5.

Perera and Michael Hudson put on 44 for Prestwich's first wicket with Perera hitting a quick 26 including two sixes before playing too soon at Houldsworth. Next ball, Hudson played on, but Thomas joined Walker and took the score to 103 before Walker got a glove to a flier from young leg spinner Ali to be caught behind.

Thomas scored a fine 40 with two sixes before being bowled by the returning Shahabuddin and then Walters and skipper Lorenzini saw Prestwich home with 3.2 overs to spare.

Prestwich now have a home tie in the next round to the winners of the Preston and Unsworth game.
