Two of Bury AC’s young female athletes have continued their superb form through the summer.

After making her England debut in the WMRA International Youth Cup at Arco, Italy, where she finished in a creditable 34th in a time of 22mins 31secs, Sophie Whittaker, pictured, returned to the mountains in Snowdonia.

Conditions for the Volvo International Snowdonia Mountain race were horrendous but Whittaker overcame the difficult conditions to take a superb victory in the under-16 event. She then dropped down to 800 metres at Trafford last week to record a new personal best of 2:26.01 Katie Buckley concluded an outstanding schools’ career by representing Lancashire Schools at the English Schools Track and Field Championships in Birmingham.

She ran a fine 4:46.48 in the 1500m to take 10th place in the final.

Buckley also travelled to Trafford, taking first place in the North of England Under-20 women’s 3000m Championship race.

She recorded a new personal best of 10:26.01 to win comfortably by five seconds.
