Stand end on a losing note

IT proved to be a disappointing afternoon for Stand who turned in their worse batting display of the season on the final day against Dukinfield.

Newly-wed Chris Holt was missing from the line-up but the home side recovered from 18-4 to post 119 from 41 overs, thanks to a hard-fought 20 from Dave Taylor.

Fenton was the pick of the attack with for Dukinfield with 3-22.

The visitors struggled in reply and never really threatened to score at more than two an over with all Stand’s bowlers proving economical.

At half-way they had restricted the visitors to 57-3 as the introduction of spinners Stuart Catterall and Pete Walters made scoring extremely difficult.

After 50 overs of the innings Dukinfield had reached 98-7.

Gascoigne came in and hit a quickfire 11 to relieve some of the pressure and eventually the visitors crawled past Stand’s score in the 58th over – Mayne finishing unbeaten on 23, with Butterworth and Walters both taking 3-32.

Sunday’s match at Cheetham Hill was called off after a downpour.

Stand had progressed to 153-5 with 13 overs left. Matt Holt top scored with a fine 42 including some sublime cover drive boundaries, while Taylor looked in good nick with an unbeaten 31.

However, the wet weather arrived and Stand’s season ended just as it started with a rained-off game.

They finished the season in seventh place in the league with their highest points haul of 72, despite 10 no-results.
