Sedgley seek capital gain in opener

SEDGLEY Tigers will face a tough test when they kick off their National League One season in London on Saturday.

The Whitefield men travel to a Rosslyn Park side who have splashed the cash in search of a promotion season this time around.

And with the Tigers being without half a dozen regular first-teamers due to injury, the trip – one of several to the capital this season – promises to provide a searching examination of their squad strength and quality.

They will be hoping for a repeat of last season’s opening day when they appeared to face an equally daunting away game at Cambridge.

In the event, they came through it in style with a top-class performance and comprehensive victory.

“It’s a really tough one to be starting off with,” said last season’s captain Garth Dew who has been out since last November with a knee injury and remains on the sidelines.

“They have made some big signings and spent a lot of money.

“It’s not an easy place to start your season so we’ll have a better idea of where we’re at after this weekend.

“We beat them at home towards the end of last season in one of our better games, but, as I said, they’ve signed some good players and I think they will be pretty strong.

“But last year we had a good win in our first game at Cambridge. They were seen as a tough test for us then, but we smashed them in the second half and turned them over quite easily, so we’ll see how we go on this weekend.”

Dew has had two operations on his knee and is not expected to return until November.

With another handful of last season’s core team also not expected to recover from injury for a month or two, it may take the Park Lane men a little while to show exactly what they are capable of.

But they have added more depth to their squad by retaining all of last season’s squad apart from Danny Birchall – who has joined Fylde – and making a handful of new signings.
