Sorry Stand are blown away by whirlwind

STAND had no answer to big-hitting rivals at Cheetham Hill on Saturday in a Lancashire County League duel that was reduced to a 20-overs-a-side slog by heavy rain that delayed the start.

The home side produced a a typical Twenty20 performance, winning the toss and electing to bat first on a wet wicket.

Stand managed to restrain the hosts early on and looked relatively comfortable at the halfway point when Cheetham Hill were 66 without loss.

But the opening pair of professional Butt and Zeshan Mirza cut loose and smashed boundaries almost at will.

Mirza was first to go, run out after a mix-up for 43. Bajwa went soon after but Anwar and Butt continued to score heavily and the pair added 60 inside seven overs before Butt (49) was caught on the boundary by Taylor with the score 132-3.

Cheetham Hill hit 24 from the last three overs to post a formidable total of 156-4.

Needing just under eight an over, Stand struggled from the start, failing to match the big-hitting approach of the hosts and wickets tumbled.

They were fighting a lost cause at 35-7 and were all out for 70 with two balls remaining with only Paul Duerden (33 off 23 balls) reaching double figures.

Stand 2nd XI were comfortable winners over Cheetham Hill at the SCG in a 37-over match.

Batting first they made 177-7, with Itchy Yahathugoda hitting 68, Jack Ritchie 42 and Alex Beirne 38. In reply the visitors only managed 93 as Noman Ahmed 4-43, Chris Marlor 2-26 and Tim Clements 4-23 bowled impressively.

Stand will look to bounce back at the weekend when they entertain Dukinfield on Saturday at the SCG and travel to Thornham 24 hours later.

Stand will stage a Twenty20 benefit match for professional Amila Weththasinghe on Friday, August 6, when his Sri Lanka XI take on a Rest of the World XI. The match starts at 6pm, admission £2.50, free for children.
