the Tigers returned to winning ways with a crushing defeat of their struggling near neighbours.
It was expected to be what it was — a very one-sided game — with Sedgley’s Cheshire-based opponents no doubt trying to keep the Tigers below the 100-point mark and, if possible, score a try themselves.
Their gameplan was simple — spoil as much ball as possible. However, on 12 minutes former Manchester player Garth Dew went over between the posts after a series of pick-and-drives and Steve Nutt converted.
That opened the floodgates and tries arrived courtesy of Richard Wainright (2), Chris Wilkinson and Matt Lamprey, with Nutt converting three.
The stand-out touchdown of the bunch was Wainright’s second, when he picked up a low pass and avoided the grasps of a series of would-be tacklers to go on one of his mazy runs ending in a try out wide.
Manchester then had Mathew Rockey and Danny Charlton yellow-carded on 30 minutes, thus reducing them to 13 players.
Yet despite these blows the biggest cheer from both sets of supporters heralded Manchester’s Richard Murray on 36 minutes, when his 30-metre drop goal got the visitors on the scoreboard before a Phil Jones try wrapped up the first half and Sedgley went into the break with a 38-3 lead.
With so many former Manchester players now in Sedgley’s Claret and Gold it was obvious more of them would be scoring against their former team and the next Park try was claimed by former Manchester skipper Nick Flynn, when he charged down a poor clearance kick and went over between the posts within a minute of the restart.
Nutt added the extras and the Tigers resumed their dominance.
Four more tries arrived in quick succession from Juan Crous (2), Tom Blackwell and Dew, with Nutt converting all four.
The final score of the game arrived in the final minute when, following more intense pressure on the Manchester line, Paul Williams used his considerable size to force his way over with Nutt’s kick completing the rout.
